In the following article, we’ll give you some advice and tips on planning for college.
1. Concentrate on the Core
What’s the core? Those are the core academic subjects that include:
- Social studies
- Foreign language
Concentrate on taking core classes and getting better than a passing grade. The competition for getting into college is stiff.
Are you interested in engineering, mathematics, or architecture? Take the most rigorous math classes you can.
2. Extracurricular Activities
Colleges want well-rounded students not only those with great academics. Involve yourself in some extracurricular activities like sports, theater, and community service.
You can also play an instrument, participate in academic clubs, and work a part-time job. These are all good things to include in your college applications.
3. Take the PSAT and SAT
Take the PSAT in your junior year of high school. This test qualifies you for the National Merit Scholarship as well. It’s also a good warmup for the SAT.
The PSAT covers math, reading, and writing and doesn’t count toward college admissions. It can help you get scholarship money if you excel on the test.
You’ll take the SAT your senior year. College admission boards look at your SAT scores in combination with your grades. They also look at extracurriculars when deciding on whether to admit you.
4. Organize Your Applications
Decide on colleges to which you want to apply. Get your applications together and mark the application deadlines on a calendar. Start working on college essays.
Ask teachers, coaches, or counselors about getting a letter of recommendation. You can ask any other adult who knows you well to write a letter of recommendation.
Whoever you ask, give the person enough time to put together a thoughtful letter. Discuss your extracurricular activities, community service, and anything else you’d like them to include in the letter.
Once everything is done and you’ve sent your applications, be sure and send thank-you notes to everyone who helped you along the way.
5. Start Saving
There are many ways to fund college but it helps if you’ve saved some money ahead of time. Learn about budgeting and how to handle monthly bills.
There are many things to consider about living on your own when you’re in college. Do you want on-campus housing or off campus housing?
There are pros and cons to both, and on-campus housing is sometimes more expensive. If you know where you want to go to college, you can research ahead and save yourself a lot of last-minute decisions.
