Anyone who works in the music industry gets the idea of the kind of work that goes into managing the worlds elite musicians. Things get even more complicated when there are more than a few musicians to manage at once. Herman knows this as he’s been managing the group DVBBS for about three years now, which is currently one of his primary artists. Josh says with so many people involved, opinions are always circulating, so the challenge is in keeping everyone on the same page. Herman says setting goals everyone agrees with is a prerequisite prior to demanding productivity.
“Managing a band is very similar to running a company and every successful company has a strong team behind it and with STRVCTVRE, I work closely with to everyone to ensure maximum productivity in our work.”
Communication and Organization is a Skill
Herman says that communication is key and making sure everyone’s opinion and ideas are heard, considered and respected is essential. Another important asset is to be organized, we always hold band meetings and resolve any issues we may have, its also a good opportunity to talk about new goals or objectives.
The music industry is always changing, communication between managers, musicians and organizations is more important than ever. Finding the right opportunities and acting on them in time can make the difference in an artists career, so even if it means changing your initial plans, you have to be flexible and willing to make changes.
“Doors close just as fast as they open and having good intuition and making the right decision is an essential skill to any manager,” he said.
Define The Principles For Success
What qualities does a band manager need to be successful? Herman says its in knowing how to keep everyone happy and on the same page, while setting optimistic but reachable goals. “ Having the right direction is very important in letting artists focus on their music, you kind of have to provide them with the support and direction they need, we have to have confidence in what we are doing”
Figure Out Your Career Path
Herman’s start in band management goes back to his college years at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. As a freshman studying Music, he started booking and managing artists, finding venues for them to perform.
“I was teaching myself everyday and to this day its still a learning experience. Naturally, I got more involved with music management, it was just meant to be and had alot to do with my desire to work closely with elite artists.”
Herman also says, “The artist-manager relationship is unique and special and differs from the rest of what goes on in the music industry. My relationship with my artists is what makes me stand out against everyone else. Music moves me and I am passionate in getting good music out there into the world.”
Success Is More Than Just a Reward
As a manager, Josh says that you are basically an entrepreneur building your own company. You have to have good habits and constantly develop the brand and build something strong enough to create a ‘culture’ that can attracts the best artists. Herman also states there is no greater reward than working so closely with an artist or a band since day one.
“You get to see them grow and there is no greater reward than seeing how far they have  come and that you were there form the start”
