All You Need to Know About the Apple iPhone XS and XS max

Last year Apple introduced a new era of iPhones, the iPhone X. the design was stunning with the new beautiful edge to edge display which gave the phone a bigger screen size while giving it a smaller footprint. The introduction of the ingenuous face detection elements housed in the famous apple notch giving Face ID “unrivaled face detection and security”. Well, this year Apple has taken a more iterative approach usually done with their “S” branded update products. Apple has built on the iPhone X design mainly with better finishes. The most outstanding features of the new iPhones Apple announced today at the Apple event held in the Steve Jobs theater in the Apple academy in Cupertino is performance. Performance is the theme of this year’s iPhone update which we expected

The iPhone Xs and Xs Max: Design and Display

iPhone xs design

The design of the iPhone Xs and Xmax are the same as the iPhone X. They have a steel frame around the edge to edge notched display with very thin bezels all the way around, sleek rounded edges. That iPhone xs leaked wallpaper looks dope on it. The notch holds the same Face ID systems in the iPhone x required for unlocking the phone including an infrared camera, flood illuminator, proximity sensor, ambient light sensor the front camera and the Dot projector. The phones also have no home button.  The main change is to the color scheme: this year we’ve got a gold shade finish which looks dope especially in person. They are still made with glass in front and behind which Apple refers to as “the hardest glass on any phone”

SlashGear: iPhone xs display

The iPhone Xs holds a 5.8-inch Super retina OLED display made up of 2.7 million pixels and every inch holds 458 pixels. The X Max looks exactly the same but with a bigger 6.5inch display with 3.3 million pixels and 458 pixels per inch. Apple says both displays are a 120Hz display which will be great for gaming and smooth scrolling. It supports 3D touch, tap to wake, true color tones with a wider color gamete and wider dynamic range delivering rich colors, deep blacks, and strong contrast ratios. Apple has made the screen with a 60% better dynamic range to the already-offered HDR 10 and Dolby Vision movies

The iPhone XS and Xmax are water-resistant to IP68 rating, improved from on the X. it can resist dust and water for up to 2m deep for 30minutes.  There are improved dual speakers on the top and bottom of the device which spits out more dynamic and rich-sounding.

The iPhone Xs and Xs Max: The new A12 Bionic chipset.

A12 bionic chip

The A12 bionic chip is the latest of Apple’s processor. This iteration of the chip comes with increased speeds. Apple was proud to announce that it’s the “industry’s first 7nm chip”. It is packed with 6.9 billion transistors. The main parts of the chip is a 6 core 64-bit processor which is 15% faster and 40% more efficient, a 4 core GPU 50% faster than the A11 chip. A second generation 8 core neural engine for processing real-time machine learning. It can process 5 trillion operations per second apple says.

It makes the devices faster with a pleasant scrolling experience. This A12 Bionic chipset drastically improves the speed and camera performance and also enhances the display.

The iPhone Xs and Xs Max: Camera

iphone xs camera

The iPhone Xs sports dual cameras on the back. There are two 12MP sensors with an improved true tone flash, both with optical image stabilization, one is a wide-angle lens offering higher-quality low-light performance, and the other a telephoto lens that allows for 2x zoom to get you closer to subjects.

The two can be used together in Apple’s Portrait Mode, enabling you to blur backgrounds and allowing you to change the lighting or add effects to the subject with a few simple swipes.

You can also change the depth effect of the bokeh from within the app. The power of the A12 bionic is also used here. It upgrades the phone’s capability to understand and improve photos. It can now dynamically work out scenes and enhance overall photo quality algorithmically.

On the front is a 7MP camera with an F2.2 aperture which works together with the IR camera and the dot projector to create beautiful precise bokeh effect on photos

The iPhone Xs and Xs Max: Battery

As ever, Apple doesn’t announce the size of its battery on stage, preferring to talk about what its phones can actually do. The iPhone X last year had a capacity of just over 2,700mAh, but could generally last pretty much the whole day. Apple focused on how long the battery can go not how bigger it was, so we are suspecting the same 2,700mAh battery which will last longer because of the more efficient A12 bionic chip

Apple did not mention wireless charging but we assume it has, based on the Qi standard, and the fact that the phone has a glass back.

There aren’t many huge strides forward in battery life on the iPhone XS, but that’s hardly surprising given it has the same frame, with little room to shove in more battery capacity.
